BraunAbility and Winnebago open up RV camping to a wider audience with their new wheelchair accessible RV camper.

Traditionally, motorhomes—especially those suitable for wheelchair users—are expensive, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and are large, so most campers cannot get them.

Winnebago's new RV, The Roam, is specifically designed for barrier-free access. The Roam is based on the Ram ProMaster van, which is a smaller B-class motorhome. The new RV has enough space for wheelchair users to move around, and the price is much cheaper.

Winnebago worked with accessibility advocates such as BraunAbility to design the interior of The Roam, using universal design as a guiding principle when developing the design.

The 2021 Ram ProMaster is the foundation of The Roam and is less than 20 feet in length. Winnebago ensures that there is enough floor space to support the wheelchair and important barrier-free facilities, such as the BraunAbility wheelchair lift under the sliding side door.

Roam includes standard wheelchair fixtures, wheelchair lifts under the car, electric sofa beds, toilets and showers with handles, system controls and barrier-free lights.

Roam can accommodate up to 5 people and up to 4 people, with an optional pop-up canopy that can sleep 2 more people. Other options include colors and TVs of your own choice. If necessary, the steering hand control device can be installed by a third party.

BraunAbility once again chose Senix sensors for this new affordable wheelchair accessible caravan.

If an object is detected in the selected area of the RV, Senix Ultrasound will activate visual and audible warnings. These warnings will alert people who may not know that the wheelchair lift is not at vehicle height or the door is open. To avoid injury, the system is designed to prevent the vehicle from exiting accidentally.

The profile and wider beam angle of the Senix sensor allows engineers to cover a large area within the RV—larger than any other sensor on the market.

Wide-beam technology sensors, such as Senix's high-performance ToughSonic ultrasonic distance and liquid level sensors, can be customized using SenixVIEW software. This allows a large number of user-configurable parameters to be set.

BraunAbility sensors can be easily calibrated using SenixVIEW software to support various in-vehicle applications.

Senix's wider beam ultrasonic sensor combined with many user-configurable sensor parameters provides a perfect solution for BraunAbility's object detection applications, which can detect objects in the area shown in the above figure. Image source: Senix Corporation

The new Ram ProMaster Winnebago Roam has many functions. Although it is more affordable and smaller than other large and expensive motorhomes, it is still larger than ordinary passenger cars.

Senix ultrasonic technology is ideally suited for use as an object detection or proximity sensor, providing BraunAbility with greater design flexibility. The sensor can be easily calibrated using SenixVIEW software, which is convenient for various in-vehicle applications.

Senix's high-standard rugged, high-quality, long-life sensors also complement BraunAbility's customer satisfaction and high-quality reputation. Senix is pleased to work with BraunAbility and Winnebago to help Winnebago and the new Ram ProMaster Winnebago Roam succeed.
